Luminous Satellites Ii: Spatial Distribution, Luminosity Function and Cosmic Evolution

چکیده
We infer the normalization and the radial and angular distributions of the number density of satellites of massive galaxies (log10[M*h/M ] > 10.5) between redshifts 0.1 and 0.8 as a function of host stellar mass, redshift, morphology, and satellite luminosity. Exploiting the depth and resolution of the COSMOS Hubble Space Telescope images, we detect satellites up to 8 mag fainter than the host galaxies and as close as 0.3 (1.4) arcsec (kpc). Describing the number density profile of satellite galaxies to be a projected power law such that P(R)∝ Rp , wefindp = 1.1ś0.3.Wefindnodependencyofponhoststellarmass, redshift, morphology, orsatelliteluminosity.Satellitesofearly− typehostshaveangulardistributionsthataremoreflattenedthanthehostlightprofileandarealignedwithitsmajoraxis.Nosignificantaveragealignmentisdetectedforsatellitesoflate− typehosts.Thenumberofsatelliteswithinafixedmagnitudecontrastfromahostgalaxyisdependentonitsstellarmass, withmoremassivegalaxieshostingsignificantlymoresatellites.Furthermore, high− masslate−typehostshavesignificantlyfewersatellitesthanearly−typegalaxiesofthesamestellarmass, possiblyindicatingthattheyresideinmoremassivehalos.Nosignificantevolutioninthenumberofsatellitesperhostisdetected.ThecumulativeluminosityfunctionofsatellitesisqualitativelyingoodagreementwiththatpredictedusingSubHaloAbundanceMatchingtechniques.However, therearesignificantresidualdiscrepanciesintheabsolutenormalization, suggestingthatpropertiesotherthanthehostgalaxyluminosityorstellarmassdeterminethenumberofsatellites. Modeling the Milky-Way Satellite galaxies
We revisit the Milky Way satellite problem using a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation and compare the predicted luminosity function to recent result from the SDSS. With cosmic photoionization, the luminosity function can be brought into broad agreement with the data between −15 < MV < −2. This improvement over previous semi-analytical model results (e.g., Benson et al. 2002) is from our ...
متن کاملQuantifying the Luminosity Evolution in Gamma-ray Bursts
We estimate the luminosity evolution and formation rate for over 900 GRBs by using redshift and luminosity data calculated by Band, Norris, & Bonnell (2004) via the lag-luminosity correlation. By applying maximum likelihood techniques, we are able to infer the true distribution of the parent GRB population’s luminosity function and density distributions in a way that accounts for detector selec...

The interacting two winds model and a spherical density distribution function are introduced to study the dynamical and ionization structure of the planetary nebula IC 418. A fast wind with a mechanical luminousity 2/34×1034erg.s-1 of interacts with a super wind with a mass-loss rate of 2×10-5M(°)yr-1 and a velocity of 10 , and produces a dense and luminous medium. In this model, the exp...
متن کاملEvolution of the dusty infrared luminosity function from z = 0 to z = 2.3 using observations from Spitzer⋆⋆⋆
Aims. We derive the evolution of the infrared luminosity function (LF) over the last 4/5ths of cosmic time using deep 24 and 70 μm imaging of the GOODS North and South fields. Methods. We use an extraction technique based on prior source positions at shorter wavelengths to build the 24 and 70 μm source catalogs. The majority (93%) of the sources have a spectroscopic (39%) or a photometric redsh...
متن کاملReconstructing the Cosmic Evolution of Quasars from the Age Distribution of Local Early–type Galaxies
We use the spectra of ≈22,000 nearby early–type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to determine the age distribution of these galaxies as a function of their velocity dispersion σv in the range 100 km s−1 ∼< σv ∼< 280 km s−1. We then combine the inferred age–distributions with the local abundance of spheroids, including early–type galaxies and late–type bulges, to predict the evo...
